STEM Synergy and Haramaya University Renew Partnership with MoU Signing and Successful Hands-On STEM Training

STEM Synergy is proud to announce the renewal of our strategic partnership with Haramaya University through the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), building on a collaboration that began with the establishment of the university’s STEM Center in 2019.

The renewed MoU reaffirms our joint commitment to strengthening STEM Center operations, expanding outreach programs, enhancing joint project planning, and pursuing fundraising initiatives for greater impact. By leveraging Haramaya University’s strong academic and research capabilities alongside STEM Synergy’s nationwide expertise in STEM education, this partnership will open new pathways for youth to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—equipping them to lead in a technology-driven future.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Yisehak Yusuf, Vice President for Research and Community Engagement at Haramaya University, and Ato Abiyot Lakew, Country Director of STEM Synergy. The ceremony took place in the presence of key stakeholders, including the Director of Community Engagement, the STEM Center Coordinator, and STEM Synergy’s Project Manager, highlighting the deep institutional support for this collaboration.

Hands-On STEM Training Program Empowers 100 Students in Eastern Ethiopia

Haramaya University’s Community Engagement Directorate, in collaboration with STEM Synergy, successfully delivered a five-week Weekend STEM Training Program from November 15 to December 20, 2025.

The Level One hands-on training engaged 100 secondary school students from four schools in Maya City, focusing on four core areas:

  • Biology & Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Digital Literacy & Electronics

The program aimed to build practical skills, spark interest in STEM, and bridge classroom theory with real-world application.

At the closing ceremony on December 20, certificates were awarded to 96 successful participants by Ato Abiyot Lakew, alongside Dr. Henok Desalegn, Haramaya University STEM Center Coordinator, and Dr. Seleshi Deme, Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences.

In his remarks, Ato Abiyot Lakew highlighted STEM Synergy’s decade-long dedication to university-based STEM Centers and structured programs across Ethiopia, including mentoring, national competitions, and teacher development. He noted that completers of Level One are eligible to advance to Level Two, with project-based learning introduced at Level Three.

Looking Ahead This successful training and MoU renewal mark an exciting new chapter, creating momentum for expanded STEM opportunities, community outreach, resource sharing, and technology transfer in the region. Together, we are investing in Ethiopia’s youth, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable development.

STEM Synergy extends heartfelt thanks to Haramaya University leadership, the STEM Center team, participating schools, and all students for their enthusiasm and commitment.
