STEM Synergy took a significant step toward expanding its impact into regions by participating in a validation workshop on “Strengthening Research and Innovation Pathways: from community projects to start-up incubation” at Mattu University on October 11. The event, organized by the university in collaboration with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MinT), focused on creating robust systems to nurture innovation from idea to enterprise.

During the visit, our Country Director, Mr. Abiyot Lakew, visited Mattu University’s Business Incubation and STEM Centers. He observed a remarkable array of student-led projects, including radar control prototypes, automated traffic control systems, solar energy generation setups, and door security systems, which demonstrated a strong culture of practical innovation at the university.
This sparked productive discussions with the university’s STEM Center Coordinator and the Director of Community Engagement. Several promising areas for collaboration were identified, including:
- Capacity Building: Joint training for high school teachers and students in advanced STEM fields.
- Outreach Programs: Launching STEM Synergy’s signature outreach initiatives in the region.
- Resource Provision: Supplying electronics and robotics kits to enhance hands-on learning sessions.
The University President, Dr. Alemu Disassa, expressed his sincere gratitude for STEM Synergy’s interest and commitment, signaling a strong foundation for a future partnership that could significantly boost STEM capacity in western Ethiopia.
