Abiyot Lakew has served as the Country Director of STEM Synergy in Ethiopia since September 2024 G.C, leading the organization’s strategic interventions in STEM education, technology transfer, and social enterprise development. Prior to this role, he was the Project Manager from October 2020 G.C, where he played a pivotal role in scaling up STEM Synergy’s impact across the country. His leadership was instrumental in the establishment of STEM Centers, providing hands-on learning experiences that inspire and equip students with practical skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Abiyot has been at the forefront of forging strategic partnerships with local and international NGOs, universities, TVET colleges, education bureaus, and government institutions. These collaborations have significantly advanced STEM education access and supported enterprise development through innovative, STEM-based solutions. He has also led the design and implementation of STEM training programs for primary and secondary school students and championed initiatives aimed at empowering youth and women—most notably through the deployment of solar-powered bakeries that promote clean energy use and rural entrepreneurship.

Before joining STEM Synergy, Abiyot dedicated over 13 years to academia as a lecturer at the Agro-Technical and Technology College (ATTC) of Menschen für Menschen, where he served in the Manufacturing Technology Department. His expertise in product design and prototype manufacturing contributed to the development of a new generation of engineers and skilled technicians.

Abiyot holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Addis Ababa University, a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Haramaya University, a Master’s in Energy Economics from Haramaya University, and a Master’s in Renewable Energy Engineering from the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAiT). With his multidisciplinary background and passion for sustainable development, Abiyot continues to drive STEM Synergy’s mission to empower youth through innovation, education, and transformative technology.
