In September 2024, STEM Synergy collaborated with GE Aerospace and Ethiopian Airlines to conduct the GE Next Engineers Program a global initiative aimed at inspiring youth to pursue careers in STEM fields. As part of this initiative, we volunteered to coordinate and select students from various schools, specifically targeting Grade 9 students from Bole Addis, Beshale, and Harmony Hills Secondary Schools.
The students gained a unique learning experience through visits to the Ethiopian Airlines Maintenance Facility (MRO), Sky Technologies, and Aviation Academy. These tours provided an opportunity to observe the practical aspects of engineering and aviation maintenance, offering them a clearer understanding of aircraft operations.
Through guided visits, the students interacted with industry professionals, explored various roles within the aviation sector, and gained valuable insights into the skills required for careers in engineering and aviation. Their experience was further enriched by a visit to the aviation school, where they learned about diverse aviation careers and the educational pathways necessary to pursue them. They engaged with instructors and current trainees, gaining a deeper understanding of the curriculum and hands-on training involved in becoming aviation professionals.
This exposure expanded the students’ knowledge of engineering principles and also inspired them to explore STEM careers more seriously. Observing real-world applications helped them connect classroom learning with practical career opportunities, fostering a passion for innovation and problem-solving in the field of engineering.
