STEM Synergy Recognized STEM Trainees at Debre Birhan University.

On May 31, 2025, STEM Synergy proudly recognized 60 outstanding STEM trainees out of 256 students who have been participating in various STEM training programs since February 8, 2025, at Debre Birhan University. The selected trainees came from 59 secondary schools across the North Shoa Zone and Debre Birhan City Administration, with a particular focus on students from conflict-affected areas who demonstrated both ability and interest in STEM fields.

This initiative, sponsored by STEM Synergy in partnership with Debre Birhan University, aims to fulfill its mission of equipping primary and secondary students with practical, hands-on STEM skills. Training areas included electronics, robotics, SQL Server, website development, the Girls’ Coding Program, and Space Science.

The recognition event specifically honored 60 Grade 12 students who completed a three-month training program in hands-on science Lab sessions and electronics. The training was designed to provide practical skills and prepare them for the upcoming national school-leaving examination. The remaining trainees are expected to complete their programs by mid-June.

University officials, STEM center coordinators, and representatives from STEM Synergy attended the event and shared messages of encouragement. Mr. Abiyot Lakew, Country Director of STEM Synergy, congratulated the students on their achievements and introduced the organization’s mission and vision. He also emphasized the importance of such practical STEM programs that the organization has been implementing in various STEM centers across the nation and encouraged students to continue pursuing STEM-related fields if they join higher education.

Dr. Sisay Mulate, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at Debre Birhan University, highlighted the impact of such trainings and acknowledged STEM Synergy’s continued support. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to making STEM programs an annual initiative. Dr. Belete Tewabe, STEM Center Coordinator at the university, also expressed gratitude to STEM Synergy and mentioned the programs supported by the organization for the last three years.

STEM teachers from H/Maryam Mamo Secondary School, who attended the event, praised the quality of the training and the impressive performance of the students. The teachers also pointed out their challenges, such as the lack of laboratory equipment and STEM learning tools at the school level. They appreciated STEM Synergy’s ongoing efforts to address these issues.
